Running Paint Shop Pro 8 in Linux

I'm posting this here just in case some folks out there also have Linux
systems they experiment with. It's now possible to run Paint Shop Pro 8
(and v. 8.1) within Linux. It's a bit slow, and you can't apply text (yet)
but if some with experimental Linux systems are willing to experiment and
try it out, I have a page up with full online (and downloadable)
documentation on how to get it running.

I am about 100% ported to Linux. While GIMP is a nice program, I put in a
lot of time/energy/$$ into Paint Shop Pro and would not want to give that
up. However, I don't want to keep a Windows setup just for one program.
I'm going to Linux because now it's become useable as a desktop system
(for me anyway). I was used to Un*x-like OSs (OS-9 Level II) from before I
got into the PC-Compatible stuff. So it's like going back home to me.
That's why I want to stay with Linux. But I love PSP 8 too much to give it
up! So I found the best of both worlds - or at least, a compromize. :) I'm
still working on the whole project, but I can at least use PSP 8's
effects, vector drawing, layers, masks, tubes, shapes, pretty much
everything including plug-ins.

This is good news indeed. I had tried it witn WiNE and crossover office
and gave up. Its one of the few things keeping me from 100% linux, as
well *and* I have just paid for PSP8 and was thinking "o well, loooks like
Win isnt leaving my computer just yet". I know GIMP is great, but I just
haven't ever adapted to using it, in the same way that I have never
adapted to using Photoshop or any of its derivatives like imageready or
elements.

Well done :)

Maybe we could persuade Jasc to port PSP to Linux. Other than Gimp, there's little
competition anyway... does Corel make Linux ports of its graphics suite?

According to users over in Jasc's forums (where Jasc employees lurk and
even post), most users there think Jasc is all about M-O-N-E-Y and porting
PSP 8 to Linux would make them go out of business or lose a lot of money
because nobody would buy it to cover expenses. I think differently, of
course!

Someone in that discussion mentioned Corel tried that and sorta lost their
shirt, so to speak. Then again, I was never much a Corel fan anyway.

I think PSP 8 has features that Gimp doesn't have (background eraser,
easier interface, etc.)

I'm hoping that folks who want PSP 8 in Linux would either email Jasc, or
even post in their forums about it.

Jasc Web Forums: http://forums.jasc.com/
Jasc Newsgroups (linked to the web forums): news://userforums.jasc.com/

I'm hoping there'd be enough support...

Thank you. :) Over in comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine newsgroup, there's
now some wonderment about having a "windows license" in order to install
IE "legally" - well, I did put my disclaimer in there and also I do have
such a license. If those that have PSP 8 I would assume are running
Windows and would also have a Windows license. But if you ever ditch your
windows CDs entirely, and invalidate your Windows license, I guess it's
supposedly "illegal" to use it. And PSP 8 won't install without it. But
after the DOJ/MS anti-trust laws, I haven't a clue anymore. So I erred in
the sight of caution and put a disclaimer in the docs.

However, if enough people want to use PSP 8 in Linux, then maybe Jasc
would be interested in making a Linux version, so we wouldn't worry about
that. They could link to Mozilla instead, I would think?

Glad you liked my How-To. Have fun with it... and let Jasc know if you're
willing to have Linux PSP 8 - hoping to drum up some support here. ;)
